Daniel Santiago
WHAT HAPPENED
Daniel Santiago, a Filipino-American U.S. citizen, community organizer, and high school English teacher from Jersey City, New Jersey, was shot and wounded on August 9, 2024, during a weekly Palestinian demonstration against Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank village of Beita, south of Nablus. According to his own first-person account in TIME and reporting by CBS New York, Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and live ammunition at protesters, and as Santiago fled through an olive grove a soldier shot him through the upper right thigh; doctors in Nablus identified the wound as caused by an M16 round, and he was hospitalized for days. The Israeli army called the shooting an "accident," saying troops had fired into the air, but Santiago disputed this, noting the bullet passed straight through his leg. He had used the pseudonym Amado Sison for safety. One month later, activist Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi was killed at the same protest site.
