Arik Ascherman
WHAT HAPPENED
Rabbi Arik Ascherman, an American-born Israeli human rights activist who heads Torat Tzedek and formerly led Rabbis for Human Rights, was reportedly beaten by Israeli settlers on the evening of June 11, 2025, near the Palestinian village of Mukhmas in the West Bank, where he had gone in a protective-presence role after reports of settler gunfire. According to Ascherman and news reports, he was struck with a rifle butt and a large club, suffering fractures to his neck and back, and was treated at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. The Israeli military described the incident as a violent confrontation with stone-throwing and mutual assaults between Palestinians accompanied by Israeli civilians and other Israeli civilians; Torat Tzedek said it reported the attack to Israeli police, and rabbinic groups including T'ruah and the CCAR condemned the assault and called for prosecution of the attackers.
