WHAT HAPPENED

Shireen Abu Akleh, a 51-year-old Palestinian-American journalist for Al Jazeera, was shot in the head and killed on May 11, 2022, while covering an Israeli military raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank; she was wearing a helmet and a vest marked "PRESS." Investigations by the UN and multiple news organizations attributed the fatal shot to Israeli forces, and the Israeli military acknowledged in September 2022 a "high possibility" that one of its soldiers had shot her, saying any such shooting was accidental. A U.S.-coordinated review concluded that gunfire from Israeli military positions was likely responsible, while stating it found no reason to believe the shooting was intentional; Israel has not opened a criminal investigation.

TESTIMONY

“We were going to film the Israeli army operation and suddenly they shot us without asking us to leave or stop filming.” — Ali al-Samoudi, Al Jazeera producer wounded in the same shooting
