WHAT HAPPENED

Omar Assad (Omar Abdalmajeed As'ad), a 78-year-old Palestinian-American who had lived for decades in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died on January 12, 2022, after Israeli soldiers of the Netzah Yehuda Battalion detained him at a makeshift checkpoint in his home village of Jiljilya, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, where he was bound, blindfolded and gagged and left unresponsive at an abandoned building site. A Palestinian autopsy found he died of a stress-induced heart attack attributed to his treatment, and an Israeli military investigation acknowledged what the IDF called a moral failure, dismissing two officers from their posts and reprimanding a third. In June 2023 the Israeli military advocate general closed the case without criminal charges, a decision the U.S. State Department said it would raise directly with Israel while calling for full accountability.
