WHAT HAPPENED

Mahmoud Shaalan, a 16-year-old Palestinian-American born and raised in Florida, was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers on February 26, 2016, at a military checkpoint near the Beit El settlement, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military said he attempted to stab soldiers at the checkpoint; witnesses cited by human rights groups disputed this account, saying he was shot from a distance and again after he fell, and that medical aid was delayed. According to news reports, Israel's military investigation found no wrongdoing by the soldiers and closed the case, while the U.S. State Department expressed concern about the possible use of excessive force.
