WHAT HAPPENED

Tariq Abu Khdeir, a 15-year-old Palestinian-American from Tampa, Florida, was severely beaten by Israeli border police officers on July 3, 2014, while visiting family in Shuafat, East Jerusalem, during unrest that followed the killing of his cousin Mohammed Abu Khdeir; video showed masked officers punching and kicking him while he was restrained. He was detained and later released on bail, and the U.S. State Department said it was "profoundly troubled" by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody, calling for a credible investigation. An Israeli border police officer was subsequently convicted of assault and sentenced to 45 days of community service and a suspended prison term; Tariq survived his injuries and returned to the United States.
