WHAT HAPPENED

Emily Henochowicz, a 21-year-old American art student at Cooper Union studying on exchange in Jerusalem, was struck in the face by a tear gas projectile fired by Israeli Border Police during a May 31, 2010 demonstration at the Qalandiya checkpoint in the West Bank, held in response to the Gaza flotilla raid. She lost her left eye and suffered multiple facial fractures requiring surgery and metal plates. Witnesses said officers fired canisters directly at protesters, while Israel's Defense Ministry said the canister ricocheted off a concrete barrier; an Israeli police investigation exonerated the officers, and the Defense Ministry initially refused to cover her medical bills.
