Rachel Corrie
WHAT HAPPENED
Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American activist from Olympia, Washington, was crushed to death by an Israeli military Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer on March 16, 2003, in Rafah, Gaza Strip, while protesting Palestinian home demolitions with the International Solidarity Movement. The Israeli military's investigation concluded her death was an accident, saying the driver did not see her, while fellow activists said she was clearly visible in a fluorescent jacket. In 2012 the Haifa District Court dismissed her family's civil suit, ruling the state not liable — a verdict Israel's Supreme Court upheld in 2015 — and U.S. officials stated they did not believe the Israeli investigation had been "thorough, credible and transparent."
